By default an assignment that allows File Uploads will allow any kind of file. This can include video files such as MP4 and MOV files. An instructor has the option to restrict uploads to certain type of file, for example it's possible to only allow students to submit PDF documents. You can use this same mechanism to restrict the file type to only certain video types. Two of the most common video file types are MP4 and MOV, restricting an assignment to only those video types would be recommended.
There is another assignment submission option called "Media Recording". This option would allow students to upload any type of audio or video file as well as record media directly in Canvas.
If the student chooses to upload a media file, he or she can choose any audio or video file. The instructor can then download this file and play it on his or her computer.
If the student chooses to record a media file, they may choose to record a video file or an audio file. The student will need to have the appropriate recording equipment available. The instructor can watch or listen to the record media directly in the speed grader, no downloading is necessary.
